Could the Knicks Make a Move for Suns Superstar Guard This Offseason?
The New York Knicks made significant roster changes last offseason, trading multiple first-round picks for Mikal Bridges and sending Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo to Minnesota in exchange for Karl-Anthony Towns.
Despite their 37-20 record through 57 games with this revamped squad, they still appear to be a step below the leagueโs top contenders. As a result, they may need to add another star this summer to compete at the highest level.
If available, Phoenix Suns superstar Devin Booker could be a player they target. NBA insider John Gambadoro has suggested that Booker might be on the move if the Suns fail to make the postseason.
โThe biggest question now is Booker,โ Gambadoro said. โWould Booker want to stay? If you traded Booker, you would get more for Booker than if you traded Durant. โฆ So if you wanted to, you could trade Durant and Booker, completely start over, have a bunch of young players and draft picks.โ
The Suns have underperformed this season, sitting 11th in the Western Conference with a 27-31 record and losing eight of their last 10 games. Despite having Booker and Kevin Durant leading the team, they have failed to meet expectations. Booker remains a top performer, averaging 26.2 points and 6.8 assists, and at just 28 years old, he would be a highly coveted asset.
What Would a Knicks Trade for Booker Look Like?
The Suns also have limited draft capital for the future, making a potential rebuild more appealing. Meanwhile, the Knicks face challenges in making additional roster moves, as they risk exceeding the second apron.
Acquiring Booker might require New York to part with OG Anunoby and Mitchell Robinson to match salaries, along with draft picks. Booker is currently in the first year of a four-year, $220 million contract, earning an average of $55 million annually.
Although bringing in Booker would drastically alter the Knicksโ roster, he could be the third star needed to elevate them into serious title contention. However, his arrival would likely lead to a defensive drop-offโan area that has already been a concern for the team. Still, his scoring ability could be too valuable to pass up if he becomes available.
For now, Phoenixโs performance down the stretch will determine the teamโs direction. The Knicks are still adjusting to their new lineup and may be reluctant to make more drastic changes so soon. However, if Booker is on the market, New York should explore the possibility and assess what it would take to bring him to Madison Square Garden.
