The Los Angeles Lakers are pushing for a postseason spot this season with LeBron James and Luka Dončić leading the charge. Since the trade of Dončić, the team has become a serious contender in the Western Conference. However, their frontcourt remains a weakness. The trade of Anthony Davis left a significant gap in the interior, and while the Lakers have managed without a true starting center, they are expected to target one in the offseason. Los Angeles will have several options, including exploring the trade market for a big man.
Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report suggested that the Lakers could pursue Nic Claxton of the Brooklyn Nets, who would be an ideal fit. “The Lakers might need to do a little convincing to get Luka Dončić, who could enter free agency in 2026, to tie his future to theirs. Those recruitment efforts should start in full swing this summer, as the team starts to construct a supporting cast tailored to his strengths. L.A., of course, has a glaring void on the interior following the voided deal for Mark Williams, and that needs to be addressed sooner than later. The Lakers need a lob-finisher who can anchor the defensive interior, and both Claxton and (when healthy) Robinson check both boxes.”
Claxton was previously linked to the Lakers before the trade deadline, and the team could revisit this interest. His defensive and rebounding skills make him exactly what the Lakers need in a center. This season, Claxton has averaged 10.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game. He would provide a lob threat alongside Dončić and James, further strengthening the team.
Claxton’s contract is also team-friendly, with his salary declining each season. He will earn $25.3 million next year, $23.1 million the following year, and $20.9 million before hitting free agency. The Lakers may target a player like Claxton this offseason, and while he may not be the ultimate target, he would be a perfect fit for the team.
