Lakers May Acquire Bulls Center In A Trade Deal That Purple And Gold Fans Wouldn’t Like

The Los Angeles Lakers are exploring options to strengthen their roster this summer, with a focus on acquiring a full-time center. Instead of pursuing a younger talent, the team is reportedly considering a trade for veteran Chicago Bulls big man Nikola Vucevic.

As the Lakers aim for a deep playoff run in 2025, they need to build a competitive squad around Luka Doncic and LeBron James. After their failed attempt to acquire Mark Williams—whose trade was rescinded due to a failed medical—the Lakers now have a fresh set of targets for the offseason.

According to Bleacher Report, Vucevic has emerged as a potential trade candidate for Los Angeles.

    Proposed Trade Details

Chicago Bulls Receive: Rui Hachimura, Shake Milton, 2025 second-round pick
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Nikola Vucevic

While Vucevic’s experience and skill set make him an attractive option on paper, the trade may not sit well with Lakers fans. Hachimura has been a crucial piece in the lineup, especially after Anthony Davis’ departure, and losing him could weaken the team’s perimeter presence. Additionally, Vucevic’s playing style may not be the best fit alongside Doncic and James.

Lakers Need a Better Fit at Center

Statistically, Vucevic remains one of the most reliable centers available, averaging 18.8 points and 10.2 rebounds while shooting 38.6% from beyond the arc. His ability as a stretch five could benefit certain teams, but the Lakers’ current roster construction calls for a different type of center—one who excels at rim protection and complements Doncic’s playmaking.

Doncic has historically thrived with athletic, lob-catching big men, as seen with Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II last season. Even Jaxson Hayes has found success playing alongside him. This raises questions about whether investing in a 34-year-old Vucevic—who lacks elite defensive mobility—is the best move for the Lakers. A younger, defensive-minded center like Nic Claxton might be a more suitable target.

Bulls’ Perspective: Why Make the Deal?

From Chicago’s standpoint, trading Vucevic for Hachimura and Milton doesn’t offer clear long-term benefits. The Bulls previously opted for Josh Giddey over draft picks in the Alex Caruso trade, signaling a preference for younger assets with upside.

Hachimura, while a solid contributor, isn’t a future franchise cornerstone. With Patrick Williams already in their lineup, the Bulls may not feel compelled to acquire another forward on a sizable contract. If they decide to move Vucevic, they could likely fetch better assets by shopping him to teams in greater need of his offensive skill set.

Ultimately, while this trade scenario is plausible, it’s unlikely to be well-received by Lakers fans. The team must be strategic in their center acquisition to maximize their championship aspirations.
