The Los Angeles Lakers are reshaping their roster — and possibly eyeing something even bigger.
On the heels of their agreement with veteran guard Marcus Smart, the Lakers have officially waived Shake Milton ahead of his contract guarantee date, league sources confirmed. Milton, who signed a short-term deal with the Lakers earlier this offseason, was due $3 million if not released by July 20. The move clears space for Smart, who reportedly agreed to a two-year, $11 million deal after finalizing a buyout with the Washington Wizards.
Smart’s arrival gives the Lakers a much-needed defensive leader and vocal presence in the backcourt. But the ripple effects may extend beyond Milton’s exit.
Rui Hachimura’s role could also be in flux, as Smart’s versatility may push the Lakers to rethink their forward rotations. “Smart brings intensity, grit, and the ability to guard multiple positions — all things that overlap with Hachimura’s role,” one Western Conference scout said. “Don’t be surprised if Rui’s minutes drop unless he finds a new gear.”
While those internal shifts play out, speculation around a potential blockbuster trade gained momentum this weekend when Heat star Bam Adebayo was spotted courtside with Lakers legend Pau Gasol at the WNBA All-Star Game in Phoenix.
The photo quickly circulated across social media, fueling rampant trade talk. Adebayo, wearing bright yellow pants, posed with Gasol and several WNBA stars — a casual moment that fans interpreted as anything but.
Although there’s been no official word from either franchise, some around the league believe the Lakers could explore an aggressive move if the Heat make Adebayo available. “You don’t overreact to a photo,” an Eastern Conference executive said. “But when a star like Bam starts showing up around Lakers royalty, people talk — and front offices pay attention.”
The Heat face looming financial decisions, with Adebayo eligible for a supermax extension projected at over $51 million annually. If Miami chooses to reset around younger pieces or preserve cap flexibility, Adebayo could become a serious trade candidate.
In Los Angeles, Smart’s arrival is already reshaping the depth chart — but the front office may not be done. “This team knows it needs more to seriously contend,” the executive added. “If Bam ever hits the market, the Lakers will be in that conversation.”
For now, the Lakers’ next chapter begins with Smart suiting up — and the rest of the league watching closely.
