As they continue to build around Luka Doncic, the Los Angeles Lakers have explored multiple options to strengthen their frontcourt.
Their attempt to acquire Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets fell apart due to medical concerns, leading them to consider other alternatives before the trade deadline.
On his podcast Buhaโs Block, The Athleticโs Jovan Buha revealed that the Lakers had also shown interest in Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren. However, Detroit rejected their approach. Buha noted that the Lakers could revisit this potential move in the summer.
Previously, the Lakers prioritized maximizing their championship window with veteran stars, including 40-year-old LeBron James and 31-year-old Anthony Davis, who has struggled with injuries.
Now, with the 25-year-old Doncic leading the way, general manager Rob Pelinka is focused on securing a younger core to maintain long-term competitiveness.
At just 21, Duren aligns perfectly with this vision. This season, he has posted averages of 10.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks across 52 games. He remains under contract for another year before becoming a restricted free agent in 2026, making him a valuable long-term asset for any team looking to bolster its interior presence.
Despite the Lakersโ interest, acquiring Duren remains a challenge. The Pistons, currently sixth in the Eastern Conference with a 29-26 record and pushing for the playoffs, view him as an essential part of their future.
As the offseason approaches, the Lakers will remain a key team to watch in trade discussions, particularly as they continue searching for the right frontcourt partner for Doncic. With their decision to back out of the Williams deal, the need for a reliable center remains a pressing issue.
Additionally, Doncic will be eligible for a contract extension this offseason, and securing a long-term answer at center could be a crucial factor in persuading him to commit to the team for the future.
