Lakers’ Next Blockbuster? Elite Center Linked to Luka Doncic Superteam

The Los Angeles Lakers made waves over the weekend with a stunning blockbuster trade, sending Anthony Davis to the Mavericks in exchange for Luka Doncic. This move positions the Lakers for long-term success, as they now have one of the league’s premier talents entering his prime.

With Doncic now on board, the Lakers must build a roster that complements his strengths. While the partnership between Doncic and LeBron James is exciting, the team still needs to bolster its defense and frontcourt depth.

General Manager Rob Pelinka is expected to seek a starting center following Davis’ departure, and one veteran big man currently rumored to be on the trade market appears to be an ideal fit.

    Lakers Receive: Clint Capela

Hawks Receive: Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, 2025 Second-Round Pick

Lakers Acquire Clint Capela in Latest Trade Proposal

Clint Capela of the Atlanta Hawks is a realistic trade target for the Lakers in exchange for Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, and a second-round pick. This deal should appeal to the Hawks, given their current roster situation.

Doncic thrives alongside rim-running centers who can finish lob passes, having formed strong pick-and-roll partnerships with Dereck Lively and Daniel Gafford in Dallas. Capela brings a similar skill set, having played a comparable role alongside Trae Young in Atlanta. Additionally, he is a capable rim protector and rebounder, immediately making him the Lakers’ top defensive big man.

The 30-year-old center is also on an expiring contract, giving the Lakers flexibility. If the partnership doesn’t work out, they can let him walk in free agency or negotiate a team-friendly extension.

For the Hawks, moving Capela makes sense, as they already have Onyeka Okongwu ready to take over at center. Acquiring Hachimura would provide them with a solid wing option, especially with Jalen Johnson sidelined for the season. Given Atlanta’s rebuilding phase, offloading veterans in exchange for younger players and future assets aligns with their long-term strategy.

While Capela is a strong option, the Lakers have other potential targets in Jakob Poeltl, Walker Kessler, and Mitchell Robinson. Depending on the trade cost, Capela could be one of the best choices to fill the void left by Davis.
