Marcus Smart is officially on his way to Los Angeles. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the veteran guard has finalized a contract buyout with the Washington Wizards and intends to sign a two-year, $11 million deal with the Lakers once he clears waivers.
“BREAKING: Marcus Smart has agreed to a contract buyout with the Washington Wizards and intends to sign a two-year, $11 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers after clearing waivers, sources tell ESPN,” Charania reported. “A return to a grand stage for the 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.”
Smart will reportedly have a player option on his new deal, giving him flexibility to re-enter free agency in 2026 when the market is expected to be more favorable.
This move follows unsuccessful trade attempts involving Smart, which ultimately led to Washington letting him walk. The Lakers quickly capitalized, adding a respected veteran who remains one of the league’s fiercest defenders.
Now 31, Smart brings toughness, leadership, and defensive pedigree to a Lakers backcourt that already includes Austin Reaves, Bronny James, and Gabe Vincent. Though not known for his scoring, the former No. 6 overall pick and 2022 Defensive Player of the Year averaged 9.0 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists last season while shooting 39.3% from the floor and 34.8% from deep.
