The Los Angeles Lakers are making a strong push as LeBron James’ career nears its end. Recently, they finalized a deal sending Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka Doncic, pairing the 25-year-old star with one of the greatest players ever. While preparing for the future, the Lakers are also positioning themselves to compete for an NBA title with the James-Doncic duo. However, despite the clear talent, the Lakers are missing a key two-way center after Davis’ departure. Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor recently reported that Los Angeles is targeting a center ahead of the February 6 trade deadline.
- “League sources say the Lakers are looking for a big man and Mitchell Robinson from the New York Knicks is one of the bigs they are targeting,” O’Connor said. “That’s what I’m hearing in the aftermath so far, after that absolutely nuts Lakers-Mavericks-Jazz trade that happened in the wee hours on Saturday into Sunday.”
Robinson, who is in his sixth season with the Knicks, is under a four-year, $60 million contract. This season, he is averaging 8.0 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 0.6 assists per game. The 7-footer would join two of the NBA’s top playmakers. LeBron James is currently putting up 24.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 9.1 assists per game, while Luka Doncic, despite dealing with a calf injury, has been dominant, averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game before the injury in December. Currently, the Lakers’ center options include Jaxson Hayes, Trey Jemison III, and Christian Koloko.
