Lakers fans are reacting strongly after Jeanie Buss made a striking statement about Luka Doncic’s supporting cast.
Buss recently emphasized the importance of surrounding Doncic with the right players, reinforcing the Lakers’ commitment to building around their new superstar. While Doncic has yet to sign an extension—he has until August 2 to decide—LA must prove they can assemble the ideal roster for him.
During an appearance on the Games With Names podcast, Buss stated:
“I think we need to get the right players around him [Luka Doncic].”
Despite an impressive 8-4 start with Doncic in the lineup, Buss’ comments suggest the Lakers still need roster adjustments. Coach JJ Redick has done a solid job optimizing the team, but LA might need to make further moves.
Following Buss’ remarks, fans speculated on potential trades, especially concerning Austin Reaves. One fan on X/Twitter predicted:
“They are going to trade Austin Reaves to get that star after LeBron. It’s only a matter of time IMO.”
Meanwhile, another fan disagreed with trading Reaves, LeBron James, and Dorian Finney-Smith, stating:
“Anyone not named LeBron James, Austin Reaves & Dorian Finney-Smith should be shaking in their boots and prove they deserve to stay on the team.”
Some fans suggested specific moves, such as acquiring Mavericks center Dereck Lively II or bringing in former Dallas teammate Derrick Jones Jr. One fan questioned whether LeBron James himself could be expendable:
“Originally the goal was to build around LeBron. Then to build around LeBron and AD. Now to build around Luka. Does this mean LeBron too is expendable?”
Addressing Lakers’ Roster Gaps Post-Doncic Trade
The Lakers have exceeded expectations with standout performances from various players. Jaxson Hayes has been a strong defensive presence and a reliable lob threat, while Rui Hachimura has thrived as a fourth scoring option, showing notable defensive improvements.
However, concerns remain about whether Hayes and Hachimura can maintain consistency. The Lakers may seek more dependable options in the offseason, particularly at center. If they can acquire a dominant, rim-protecting big man, LA’s two-way potential with Doncic would rise significantly.
