Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams believes there were undisclosed factors beyond his failed medical that led to the Los Angeles Lakers rescinding their trade for him.
Following the Hornets’ 100-97 victory over the Lakers, Williams addressed the media, describing the entire trade situation—including his failed physical and the Lakers’ decision to back out—as a whirlwind experience. However, he suspects that the failed medical was not the sole reason behind their decision.
“You go from getting traded, thinking you’re going to LA, and then they choose to fail me on my physical… I don’t know if, for them, it was about what they gave up or what went into that reasoning, but I don’t think it was solely because of my physical.”
The Lakers had initially agreed to trade Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a 2030 first-round pick swap, and an unprotected 2031 first-round pick to the Hornets in exchange for Williams. Reports suggested that Luka Doncic personally wanted Williams on the Lakers, prompting the front office to act swiftly to acquire him.
Williams appeared eager to join the Lakers, even sharing a cryptic message featuring their signature purple and gold colors. However, after the medical evaluation, the Lakers backed out, reversing the trade and reclaiming their assets.
The Hornets were reportedly frustrated, believing they had engaged in negotiations in good faith. While the Lakers cited concerns over Williams’ medical results as the reason for voiding the deal, further review confirmed that they were within their rights to do so. Since a satisfactory medical was a key component of the agreement, the trade was nullified once that condition was not met.
In the aftermath, Williams expressed confusion over how he failed his medical, stating that he felt healthy throughout the process. His agent also criticized the Lakers, alleging they backed out unfairly at the last minute despite Williams being prepared to contribute.
Williams found some satisfaction in facing the Lakers, recording 10 points, nine rebounds, and two assists in Charlotte’s win. During the game, he was seen celebrating after LeBron James missed a crucial shot, and later, he took a subtle jab at the Lakers via his Instagram story.
For now, the NBA has no plans to penalize the Lakers for rescinding the trade, officially closing the chapter on this saga. However, the tension between Williams and the Lakers may linger for years to come.
