The Dallas Mavericks continue to face backlash from fans following the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the LA Lakers. In the latest development, Mavericks assistant coach Marko Milic, a Slovenian native, has departed from the coaching staff, as reported by NBA insider Marc Stein on Sunday.
Fans on X were quick to share their reactions.
“Nico is racist against Slovenians… he wanted them out of Dallas,” one fan tweeted.
More fans voiced their frustration.
“It’s clear that Nico Harrison and Patrick Dumont are trying to get rid of as many White players and coaches as possible,” another fan posted.
“Nico has caused such irreparable damage to a franchise he will soon be banished from,” one comment read.
Additional reactions poured in.
“It feels like the new ownership wants to erase most of the history that was accumulated by the previous ownership (Mark Cuban),” a fan tweeted.
“My man legit said I’d rather be unemployed than work for a moron. Respect,” another fan wrote.
Milic reportedly chose to leave the Mavericks following Doncic’s departure. He had joined the coaching staff ahead of the 2022-23 season, bringing with him 21 years of professional playing experience.
Luka Doncic Trade Shakes Up Mavericks’ Future
The Mavericks’ decision to trade Doncic to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis stunned the NBA world. At just 25, Doncic had established himself as the face of the franchise, earning accolades such as Rookie of the Year, five All-NBA First Team selections, and leading Dallas to the 2024 NBA Finals.
The trade signified a major shift for the Mavericks, who are now expected to build around Davis, a 31-year-old eight-time All-Star. While Davis remains an elite player, many fans are uncertain about the team’s future without Doncic.
However, Davis made an impressive debut in Dallas’ 116-105 home victory against the Houston Rockets on Sunday, putting up 26 points, 16 rebounds, and seven assists before exiting due to a non-contact groin injury.
Mavericks Ownership Speaks on Doncic Trade
Dallas Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont addressed the controversial trade in an interview with The Dallas Morning News via Brad Townsend. Dumont expressed sympathy for the fans while wishing Doncic success with the Lakers.
“I want you to know I really sympathize with all of our fans who feel hurt,” Dumont said. “Look, as far as I’m concerned, Luka is a Mav for life, and I really wish him nothing but happiness and success in his career as he continues in LA.”
Acknowledging the fan backlash, Dumont reaffirmed his confidence in General Manager Nico Harrison’s decision-making. The move remains highly debated, especially as Doncic was eligible for a $345 million supermax extension in just four months.
Despite the criticism, the Mavericks now look ahead to a new era centered around Anthony Davis.
