Could Luka Doncic have already locked in his future with the Lakers?
A surprising report from Slovenian news outlet Sportklub claims the superstar guard has already agreed to a four-year, $229 million extension with Los Angeles. Doncic, who was acquired in a blockbuster trade midseason, is eligible for a max extension on August 2 and set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027.
Since his arrival in L.A., Doncic has transformed the team’s outlook. At just 26 years old, he’s considered to be entering his prime, and the Lakers are reportedly doing everything they can to secure his long-term commitment.
While Doncic can’t officially sign an extension yet, Sportklub’s Martin Pavcnik shared new details that suggest the deal is already informally in place.
“The American media speculated that Luka, who has been sculpting his body in recent weeks, losing several kilograms and reducing his body fat percentage, might be delaying signing a new contract since September,” Pavcnik wrote.
“There were even hints that he might wait until next summer, when he would be a completely free player and available to all clubs. But it seems that the uncertainty will soon be over. Dončić is said to have agreed to a four-year extension worth 229 million US dollars.”
Though the Lakers haven’t confirmed any agreement, the timing couldn’t be better. With LeBron James turning 40 and the franchise balancing win-now ambitions with future flexibility, securing Doncic would be a massive statement of intent.
Just recently, the Lakers also signed former No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton to a two-year contract, hoping he can anchor the center position after a rocky stretch last season.
If Pavcnik’s report holds up, this could mark the dawn of a new era in L.A. Luka Doncic is widely viewed as a generational talent, and pairing him with the right supporting cast could return the Lakers to consistent title contention. Anything less than deep playoff runs won’t cut it—especially after their disappointing first-round exit to the Timberwolves this past season.
