Manchester City has faced a significant setback with the news of Rodri’s injury. The team has learned that they won’t be able to recall Kalvin Phillips from his loan to Ipswich Town, as details of his agreement have surfaced.
On Monday, Pep Guardiola was informed that Rodri, a key midfielder, will be sidelined for the entire 2024/25 season due to a torn ACL sustained during City’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
This injury requires surgery and presents a considerable challenge for the club as they seek to maintain their title challenge against Arsenal and Liverpool.
According to The Athletic, the terms of Phillips’ loan prevent City from bringing him back to the Etihad this season.
After a disappointing stint at West Ham United last year, Phillips is looking to revitalize his career with Ipswich, where he has played three matches so far, although he did not feature in their recent 1-1 draw with Southampton.
Phillips expressed enthusiasm about his move to Ipswich, stating, “I’ve had some great conversations with players I know here and also with the manager… I’m excited to be here and be part of his team, playing how he likes to play the game.” He added, “The conversations with Kieran McKenna and (CEO) Mark Ashton have been really good… I know the journey the club has been on and it’s a great story which I’m now excited to be a part of.” He also emphasized his desire to “play as many games as possible, enjoy playing football again and help the team win as many games as possible in the Premier League.”
Since joining Manchester City in June 2022, the 28-year-old has struggled to secure a regular spot in Guardiola’s plans, making only 31 appearances.
With Rodri’s injury, City will need to explore other options to address their midfield issues, potentially relying on Ilkay Gundogan, who returned from Barcelona, as well as Matheus Nunes and young talent James McAtee this season.
