JJ Redick Discusses What Mark Williams Brings to the Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers, after acquiring Luka Doncic, were left with a gap at center following Anthony Davis’ departure. To fill this void, they traded for Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets. The deal, which involved sending Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a 2030 pick swap, and a 2031 unprotected first-round pick, was costly. However, Williams, a promising young center in the midst of a standout season, offers the Lakers a solid partnership with Doncic for the future.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick, who has mentored Williams from their time together at Duke, reflected on their connection after the trade was finalized. “I met Mark when he was playing at Duke,” Redick shared. “As he was coming out of the draft process, we had a few conversations just about the NBA, agents, and whatnot. I’ve heard great things about his character and intelligence over the years, and I’ve seen his development. I’m a big fan. I also did quite a bit of work for an interview that never happened before his last season, so I’ve been familiar with him for a while. I believe he’s a great fit now and for the future.”
Redick also discussed how Williams will impact the Lakers, particularly in his partnership with Doncic. “Yeah, I think Luka can play in various ways. It’ll be very beneficial for us to have multiple centers who can provide a vertical threat,” he explained. “We believe Mark is a young starting center who brings that threat. Our job as a staff is to develop him as a screener and a decision-maker in the pocket and on defense, but we’re confident that with his character, work ethic, and IQ, he’ll be a great player for us.”
Though Redick has leaned on small-ball lineups recently, Williams’ addition will give the Lakers the size they need. The center’s defense may need some refinement, but working with Redick and the coaching staff should aid in his growth.
While Redick is unsure when Williams will debut with the Lakers, the team will next play on Saturday against the Indiana Pacers.
