Dereck Lively has transformed as a player in his second year with the Mavericks. During his rookie season, Lively served as a lob threat and rim runner, thriving off the playmaking of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Now, entering his sophomore season, Lively looks poised to take on a bigger role. In the Mavericksโ preseason opener, the Duke alum showcased new skills, including going coast-to-coast on a fast break and finishing with a spin move, highlighting his improved ball handling.
Additionally, Lively displayed more touch around the basket. In one sequence, he posted up a Grizzlies defender and executed a smooth baby hook shot. His shot-making range has also expanded, as seen in training camp where he consistently knocked down threes.
While he is expected to back up Daniel Gafford, Lively’s growth may soon push him into the starting lineup. Head coach Jason Kidd praised Lively after a preseason performance where he recorded 12 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 13 minutes.
“We know he can shoot the three,” Kidd said, “but now he’s shown that he can put the ball on the floor, playmake, and get to the basket. We’re going to try to take advantage of that. His skill set is like no other, and he keeps developing and showing us what he can do.”
In his rookie year, the 7-footer averaged 8.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks, earning a spot on the All-Rookie Second Team and playing a crucial role in Dallasโ NBA Finals run.
