The Dallas Mavericks’ injury woes continued as Maxi Kleber suffered a foot fracture during a game against the Boston Celtics, adding to the team’s already significant injury list. With players like Luka Doncic and Dwight Powell sidelined, coach Jason Kidd described the situation as a “hole” that needed quick attention, adding that he had “never seen anything like it” when it came to the team’s injury luck.
To address the gap, the Mavericks moved quickly to sign 7-foot center Kylor Kelley to a two-way contract, waiving Jazian Gortman in the process. Kelley, who played for the South Bay Lakers in the G League this season, brings a solid skill set with averages of 9.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game. He also spent time with the Los Angeles Lakers during training camp and preseason.
Kelley is expected to be a strong fit for the Mavericks, offering excellent rim protection, lob-catching ability, and athleticism—traits that align well with the Mavericks’ system. Though not as tall as Jamarion Sharp, a player some fans had hoped for, Kelley’s 7-foot frame adds valuable depth to the center position.
Kelley will likely make his debut against the Washington Wizards, and with Daniel Gafford’s recent excellent play, the addition of Kelley could provide much-needed support. His presence may help boost energy and give Gafford a break from shouldering too much responsibility. Fans will be watching closely as Kelley takes advantage of this significant opportunity.
