Mavericks must go all-in on Raptors’ fire sale after latest trade rumors

The Dallas Mavericks were beginning to show improvement recently, despite a setback with a loss to the Detroit Pistons. Luka Doncic’s return from a calf strain is eagerly awaited, especially given the significant injuries to players like Dereck Lively II and Naji Marshall’s brief illness. With the Mavericks slowly recovering from injuries, the team is poised to make a move ahead of the trade deadline to reinforce their roster.

The Mavericks are actively searching for more perimeter defense in the frontcourt. One team they should consider trading with is the Toronto Raptors, who are in rebuilding mode with a 15-33 record.

According to Raptors insider Michael Grange, outside of Scottie Barnes and Gradey Dick, every player is potentially available. Players like Davion Mitchell, Bruce Brown, Kelly Olynyk, and Chris Boucher could be moved in exchange for draft picks.

Among these options, Olynyk and Boucher stand out as strong fits for Dallas. The Mavericks have been hit hard by injuries in their big man rotation, with only Daniel Gafford and newly signed Kylor Kelley currently healthy. Both Olynyk and Boucher could provide much-needed depth and help the Mavericks compete with top NBA teams.

Boucher, a 6-foot-9 power forward with a 7-foot-4 wingspan, could be a versatile defensive option who stretches the floor and brings energy off the bench. His shot-blocking and ability to finish at the rim would complement the Mavericks’ play style, particularly next to Doncic. Olynyk, while not as strong defensively, is an exceptional shooter, hitting 48.6% of his three-point attempts. His basketball IQ and offensive skills would seamlessly integrate into Dallas’ system, which relies heavily on the pick and roll.

While Olynyk and Boucher are the best fits, Mitchell and Brown could also help strengthen the Mavericks’ backcourt defense. The Mavericks have previously shown interest in Brown, and it’s possible they still view him as a potential target.

In summary, the Raptors have multiple players who could address the Mavericks’ needs, and acquiring one of these players, potentially for second-round picks, could make Dallas a stronger contender.
