The Dallas Mavericks are currently facing a tough situation due to injuries to key players. Center Dereck Lively II is out for two to three months after suffering a small foot fracture during a game against the Denver Nuggets on January 14. According to Reuters, “Lively has been a cornerstone for the Mavericks this season, averaging 9.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.7 blocks per game.”

In Lively’s absence, Daniel Gafford has stepped up as the starting center and has been delivering solid performances. Over the last four games, The Smoking Cuban reports, “Gafford has averaged 20.0 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 3.5 blocks per game while shooting 76.2% from the field.” However, the Mavericks have been struggling overall, having lost 10 of their last 13 games.

Adding to the difficulties, star guard Luka Dončić has been out since December 25 with a left calf strain. Reuters highlights, “The Mavericks have gone 4-10 since Dončić’s injury, which has significantly impacted the team’s performance.”

There are also trade speculations surrounding the Mavericks. Reports indicate they are considering acquiring Jordan Clarkson from the Utah Jazz to strengthen their roster. Additionally, rumors suggest that the Mavericks might trade Daniel Gafford to get a high-level perimeter defender. The Smoking Cuban warns, “Given Lively’s extended absence and Gafford’s recent strong performances, such a move could spell disaster for the team’s interior defense and overall depth.”

The Mavericks face critical decisions in the coming weeks, and their choices will likely shape the rest of their season.
