The Golden State Warriors are looking to make roster changes ahead of the NBA trade deadline on February 6, possibly parting ways with their first-round pick.
Currently at a 23-23 record, the Warriors are on the verge of playoff contention. Head coach Steve Kerr has been exploring potential options to pair with Stephen Curry. While no players stand out as perfect fits next to the future Hall of Fame guard, there are “mid-sized options and larger salary swings” that could help the team, according to Anthony Slater and Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic.
For now, the Warriors appear reluctant to dismantle the roster for a rebuild while Curry is still performing at a high level. However, they may look to acquire a player that could strengthen their team and improve their middling record.
The Warriors could be buyers at the trade deadline.
While Jimmy Butler seems unlikely to join the Warriors, the team may pursue Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine to play alongside Curry, as reported by Slater and Thompson II.
“The protection and timing of the pick is crucial. League sources indicate that the Warriors aren’t particularly fond of the prospects projected for the later part of the first round, so trading away a pick in the late teens for a solid rotation player could be well worth it.
Once the pick conveys, they’d have full control over their 2026 first-round pick for potential deals this summer. If it doesn’t convey, the Warriors would fall into the lottery and retain a high-value draft pick in a deep draft, which could either be traded or used. The risk is relatively low.”
Additionally, the Warriors are seeking a quality big man, potentially opening the door for a trade with Bulls center Nikola Vucevic.
