Nikola Vucevic has been a consistent performer in the NBA for years, and last season was no exception. In his fifth year with the Chicago Bulls, he averaged 18.5 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, while also hitting a career-best 40.2% from beyond the arc. You’d expect teams to be eager to trade for the former All-Star center, but despite reports that he’s been available for months, no significant offers have come through.
Teams simply aren’t willing to part with meaningful assets for him. His salary cap hit of $21.4 million isn’t overly high, yet the trade market remains silent. Golden State has ruled themselves out, and Boston doesn’t seem interested either. While Chicago could keep Vucevic for another season — as he’s a free agent in 2026 — it’s believed he wants to join a contender before it’s too late, especially since he turns 35 this October. According to Evan Sidery, the Bulls might consider an option they rarely use.
Buying out Nikola Vucevic would be a rare departure for the Bulls.
Jerry Reinsdorf, the Bulls’ owner, is well known for being tight with money. “Spending $21.4 million just to ensure Nikola Vucevic goes away doesn’t seem like something he’d be excited about.” Still, if convinced it’s best for the team, it might happen. General Manager Arturas Karnisovas is clearly aiming to rebuild the team around youth, athleticism, and strong defense — qualities that don’t align with Vucevic’s style. Although a buyout wouldn’t recover a draft pick, it would clear his contract and let the Bulls search for a center who fits their new vision while potentially giving them more roster flexibility for next offseason. Expect answers in the coming months.
