The Denver Nuggets are heading into the offseason after a dramatic season that brought significant organizational changes. With several key decisions looming, the front office is expected to be active in the coming days.
Despite parting ways with head coach Michael Malone and general manager Calvin Booth just weeks before the end of the regular season, the Nuggets still managed to secure the fourth seed in the Western Conference.
They were eventually knocked out in the second round of the playoffs for the second straight year, although they pushed the eventual champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, to a thrilling seven-game series.
Now focused on reshaping the roster around star center Nikola Jokic, Denver begins the offseason without a selection in the 2025 NBA Draft and will be turning its attention to free agency, which opens on Monday.
A major decision lies ahead regarding the backup point guard role, as veteran Russell Westbrook is set to become an unrestricted free agent.
If the Nuggets decide not to bring Westbrook back, they may be targeting Phoenix Suns guard Tyus Jones—also hitting the market as an unrestricted free agent.
According to Forbes’ Evan Sidery, “The Nuggets, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic are all expected to inquire about Jones once free agency opens.”
Jones, a 29-year-old guard, is reportedly a popular option among contenders and is likely to sign for the veteran’s minimum.
For Denver, acquiring Jones would be a significant addition to their second unit if they part ways with Westbrook. Known for his steady production off the bench, Jones could also fill in as a starter when needed—something Westbrook did at times last season.
In the 2024–25 campaign, Jones posted averages of 10.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game while shooting an efficient 44.8% from the floor and 41.4% from beyond the arc.
Given his skill set and experience, Jones is expected to receive plenty of attention this offseason from teams looking to strengthen their benches for a championship run.
