With their core players approaching their prime, the Memphis Grizzlies need to focus on strengthening their roster for contention. John Konchar, the oldest player expected to remain under contract next season, highlights the team’s overall youth—especially in the top half of their rotation.
The starting lineup—Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Jaylen Wells, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Zach Edey (assuming the team doesn’t make a major trade)—is mostly set. Still, a player like Dallas Mavericks forward P.J. Washington could elevate the Grizzlies significantly. His midseason arrival in Dallas last year was a catalyst for their NBA Finals push.
Although Washington won’t add much age-wise—he’ll be 27 at the start of next season—his playoff experience is exactly what Memphis needs. With Cooper Flagg projected to join the Mavericks in the upcoming draft, Washington might be seen as expendable.
“The Grizzlies should inquire about PJ Washington’s availability.” He’s entering the final year of a $14.1 million deal, and with Flagg expected to play the same position, a move seems plausible. Memphis would benefit from adding productive, two-way players if they stay committed to their current core of Morant, Jackson Jr., and Bane.
Washington, a 6’7″ Kentucky alum, put up solid numbers this season—averaging 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and shooting 38.1% from beyond the arc. On defense, he contributed 1.1 steals and blocks per game, regularly guarding top perimeter threats.
Given Flagg’s imminent role, Washington may be seeking a new team where he can compete for a starting job—something that’s unlikely in Dallas. Meanwhile, Jaylen Wells currently holds the starting small forward role in Memphis and is heading into his second year, setting the stage for an exciting competition.
A trade would be necessary to land Washington, but his versatility at both forward spots—combined with his toughness and rebounding—makes him a strong fit. A sign-and-trade involving restricted free agent Santi Aldama might be a workable solution if both sides are interested.
Additionally, Brandon Clarke could be a trade candidate to help acquire a player of Washington’s caliber, someone who fulfills a critical need for Memphis. His contributions to Dallas’ 2024 Finals run are exactly what should make him a priority target for the Grizzlies.
