The New Orleans Pelicans’ already tough season took a turn for the worse on Friday with devastating news regarding Dejounte Murray. During the first quarter of the game against the Boston Celtics at Smoothie King Center, Murray missed a shot, grabbed his own rebound, and then collapsed to the floor due to a non-contact injury. He had to be helped off the court by two members of the Pelicans’ medical staff and was later diagnosed with a torn Achilles tendon, ending his season.
Murray, in his first year with the Pelicans, had averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists over 31 games. The team has already been struggling with injuries to its three All-Stars. Murray had previously missed a month of play after fracturing his left hand during the season opener against the Chicago Bulls. Meanwhile, Brandon Ingram has been sidelined with an ankle injury since early December, and Zion Williamson has only played 13 games this season due to various health issues. With the season in disarray, the Pelicans are reportedly considering major changes as the trade deadline approaches.
