As Pete Alonso’s free agency continues, the New York Mets seem like the most likely destination for the slugger in 2025 and beyond. However, the San Francisco Giants are emerging as a potential threat, with the Seattle Mariners also being considered a possible landing spot.
Seattle’s pitching staff stood out as one of the best in baseball in 2024. Still, their offense was lacking, leading to an 85-77 record. The Mariners finished 3 1/2 games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West and missed the final AL Wild Card spot by just one game.
To improve and secure a postseason berth, the Mariners need to address their offensive shortcomings. Jomboy Media’s Trevor Plouffe predicts that Seattle will make a move to sign Alonso to a three-year, $90 million contract.
“We’re looking at this Seattle Mariners team, and obviously we know everything about their pitching staff,” Plouffe said. “But they’ve needed offense for many years… (Alonso is) instant offense.”
“I just think at that rate, three years is not a long term… I think he’s going to be productive for those three years. Why not, Seattle?”
According to former MLB player Carlos Baerga, the Mets have already offered Alonso a similar three-year, $90 million deal with several opt-outs. If Alonso receives identical offers from both the Mets and other teams, he is likely to favor staying in New York.
While it remains possible for Alonso to sign with a new team this winter, if the Mariners want to lure him away from the Mets, they may need to surpass a $100 million offer.
