Manchester United are planning a dynamic summer rebuild under the guidance of Ruben Amorim, and Fabrizio Romano has revealed a major shake-up in the club’s attacking plans. In a significant development, Romano confirmed that the Red Devils are closing in on Wolves forward Matheus Cunha—and they’re not stopping there.
Following a dismal season that many are branding the worst in United’s Premier League history, the club is desperate to turn the tide. With a lifeline still dangling—if United manage to beat Tottenham in the Europa League final—they could secure a last-minute ticket to next season’s Champions League. That outcome would dramatically enhance their financial power and appeal to top-tier players.
On Monday, Romano gave his signature “here we go” for Cunha, noting on X, “EXCL: Manchester United are now closing in on Matheus Cunha deal! The Brazilian has accepted the project… final details to sort between all parties involved… and then, here we go.”
He followed up Tuesday morning, adding: “More on Matheus Cunha exclusive story. Man United are set to approach also Wolves to proceed with £62.5m release clause payment in installments. The deal is almost done on player side as revealed yesterday, with final details being clarified. Cunha said YES.”
However, the story doesn’t end with Cunha. Romano has now disclosed that United are also seeking “one more player in the No.10 position”—a vital role in Amorim’s tactical setup. He elaborated: “My information is that Man Utd can also add one more player in the No 10 position. So to play behind the striker. It is a possibility but it will be based on outgoings. So Cunha is expected to join and one more player depending on outgoings. This is the plan at Manchester United.”
One of the prime candidates for this attacking midfield role is Rayan Cherki of Lyon. According to Football Insider, United are seriously considering a move for the French Under-23 star but will face competition from heavyweights like Bayern Munich, PSG, and Chelsea.
Former Chelsea winger Florent Malouda commented, “Simple answer: yes, he’s ready… but I want him to stay in Lyon and give us more years.” Yet he admitted Cherki has the skill for top Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Man City.
