Gabriel Martinelli’s performance against Ipswich has left Mikel Arteta with much to consider ahead of the winter transfer window, particularly with Bukayo Saka sidelined for two months.
Last season, Martinelli impressed as a right-winger, and after Saka’s early injury during the 5-1 win over Crystal Palace, the Brazilian had another opportunity to prove himself. Many believed his strong performance at Selhurst Park would spark a resurgence, but his display against Ipswich was underwhelming.
While Martinelli showed promise with a few good crosses in the first half, his second-half performance was poor, with no shots, key passes, or completed dribbles. This raises concerns as Saka’s extended absence could have left the right-wing spot open for Martinelli to claim.
Mikel Arteta confirmed Saka underwent hamstring surgery and could be out until March. As Saka is a crucial player for Arsenal, Arteta must find a reliable replacement for the right-wing role or risk a significant gap in the team.
Mikel Arteta stated:
“Bukayo Saka will be out for many, many weeks… probably MORE than 2 months. He underwent surgery. Now it depends on how the scar tissue starts to heal, the mobility of that.”
While it’s possible that Martinelli struggled against Ipswich due to their defensive setup or lack of chemistry with Martin Ødegaard, his performance raises doubts. With the winger spot open, Arteta might consider other options like Ethan Nwaneri, Kai Havertz, or Gabriel Jesus. Yet, Arteta is known for his persistence, so don’t be surprised if he sticks with Martinelli despite the lack of impact.
For Martinelli, the pressure is on to deliver soon, or he could find himself replaced by a more effective winger in the coming months.
