Arsenal’s hopes to secure RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko in the future may not be entirely dashed, as reports suggest a “gentleman’s agreement” could allow him to leave the Bundesliga club next summer.
Sesko, who was closely linked to Arsenal and Chelsea last summer, ultimately opted to extend his contract with Leipzig for another year.
Although Arsenal didn’t actively pursue a new striker, Raheem Sterling was brought in on loan to bolster their attack. This season, however, Arsenal’s scoring struggles have been evident, with Kai Havertz currently their top scorer in the Premier League, with just four goals.
Despite his extended contract until 2029, Sesko’s future remains a subject of speculation. He’s scored seven goals in 14 matches across all competitions, and the possibility of him leaving Leipzig next year has emerged, thanks to the rumored “gentleman’s agreement.”
According to Sky Germany’s Philipp Hinze, Leipzig may be open to selling the 21-year-old for a fee around £62.2 million (€75 million) if he indicates a desire to move. Notably, last summer Sesko’s release clause stood at £54 million, but it was reportedly removed when he agreed to his recent extension, along with a salary increase.
Despite the transfer buzz, Sesko appears content at Leipzig, where he has secured a key role. In a recent interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he explained his decision to stay. “I don’t comment on transfer rumors. I’m happy in Leipzig and that’s why I recently extended my contract. I want to achieve even more great things here, Leipzig wants to grow a lot and I want to accompany the team on this very intriguing journey.”
Sesko’s presence might provide a vital boost to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, who have struggled to score consistently, going goalless in two of their last three league matches—results that included losses to Bournemouth and Newcastle.
Without a victory in their last three games, Arsenal find themselves sixth in the Premier League and face a crucial clash against Chelsea on Sunday. A loss could leave them trailing league leaders Liverpool by 10 points, underscoring their need for an effective scorer to turn their fortunes around.
