Dallas Mavericks’ Disappointing Trade Package
From the moment the trade sending Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers was confirmed, it was clear the deal was unfavorable for the Dallas Mavericks. Trading away a 25-year-old superstar while only receiving Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick in return was widely seen as underwhelming.
Subsequent reports indicate that Lakers GM Rob Pelinka successfully negotiated Harrison down from an initial offer that included both a 2031 first-round pick and 2024 first-rounder Dalton Knecht. By retaining these assets, the Lakers were able to leverage them in another high-profile trade.
Lakers’ Follow-Up Trade for Mark Williams
On Wednesday night into early Thursday, the Lakers completed a deal with the Charlotte Hornets, sending Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, their unprotected 2031 first-round pick, and a 2030 first-round pick swap in exchange for young center Mark Williams. This move provides Doncic with the kind of vertical presence he thrived alongside in Dallas.
Had Harrison maximized the Mavericks’ trade return, the Lakers wouldn’t have had the assets to pull off this additional upgrade. Even if some view the price paid for Williams as steep, the move strengthens the Lakers’ lineup and adds a player Doncic reportedly enjoys playing with—boosting their playoff potential.
