Aston Villa’s Colombian striker Jhon Duran celebrated with teammate Morgan Rogers after scoring the team’s third goal in their Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Villa Park on September 21, 2024.
For the second consecutive Saturday, Aston Villa staged a comeback to defeat their Midlands rivals, winning 3-1 at home. Unai Emery made one change to the starting lineup that had triumphed over Everton, bringing in Diego Carlos for Lamare Bogarde and shifting Ezri Konsa to right back.
Carlos’s inclusion contributed to Wolves’ opening goal by Matheus Cunha, resulting from a careless pass. Despite Wolves having multiple opportunities to extend their lead in the first half, Aston Villa held firm and executed a stunning comeback in the second half.
After introducing Ross Barkley and Jhon Duran for Jacob Ramsey and Amadou Onana, Villa scored three times in the final 20 minutes. Ollie Watkins equalized, Konsa scored to take the lead, and Duran secured the victory. However, Tim Sherwood was particularly impressed by another player.
Tim Sherwood expressed his admiration for Morgan Rogers, stating, “He gets down the outside, Morgan Rogers, absolutely magnificent he’s been all afternoon.” Rogers, labeled ‘unplayable’ this season, shone especially in the second half against Wolves, leading the remarkable comeback.
He assisted the equalizer by finding Watkins with a clever pass, marking his first assist of the season. Rogers then provided another assist with a perfectly weighted left-footed cross to Duran, who scored.
Sherwood remarked, “The ball is sent down the outside and appears to be an easy pass… He simply squares it across and gives him [Jhon Duran] an easy tap-in from six yards. Rogers’ performance was just fantastic.”
Though Rogers has yet to score this season, he contributed two assists, showcasing his potential to turn impressive performances into goal involvements during Villa’s comeback at Villa Park. He will need to maintain this high level of consistency moving forward.
