Sam Szmodics has discussed his transfer from Blackburn Rovers to Ipswich Town, shedding light on the behind-the-scenes negotiations.
After a six-week transfer saga, Szmodics joined the Premier League side, despite not participating in Blackburn’s pre-season. He played briefly in their opening win against Derby County before officially signing with Ipswich ahead of their match against Liverpool.
Blackburn rejected several offers for Szmodics, ultimately agreeing on an initial fee of ยฃ9 million. He described the situation as challenging but praised Blackburn for their professionalism. โIt was really tough but Blackburn were really good because the Premier League is everyoneโs dream,” he said. โThe transfer was going on for a good six, seven weeks, and there was no hiding away from the fact that I wanted to come here.โ
Szmodics communicated his intentions to Blackburn, noting, โI did say to Blackburn that I didnโt want to play in any pre-season games… I kept everything professional at all times, which I think helped with this move.โ He acknowledged the delicate balance involved in the transfer, expressing gratitude towards Blackburn for their understanding. โBlackburn were brilliant with me,โ he stated, highlighting the complexities of transfers, where clubs have differing priorities.
He emphasized his commitment to professionalism during the process, saying, โI had a job to do and I was still contracted by Blackburn… my mind was already made up to come here.โ
