Kebonyemodisa ‘Dose’ Mosimanyane, the coach behind Letsile Tebogo’s remarkable rise, is receiving well-deserved recognition for his role in shaping the young sprinter’s historic success at the Paris Olympics.
Tebogo, who made headlines by becoming Botswana’s first-ever Olympic gold medallist, stunned the athletics world by defeating triple world champion Noah Lyles in the 200m final with an impressive time of 19.46 seconds.
US sprinter Kenny Bednarek secured silver, while Lyles had to settle for bronze with a time of 19.70 seconds. This victory marked a significant moment for Botswana, etching Tebogo’s name into the country’s sporting history.
Following his monumental win, which also saw him anchor Team Botswana to a silver medal in the 4x400m relay, Tebogo has been showered with accolades and rewards from his home country.
However, his success has not overshadowed the contributions of his coach, Mosimanyane, who has been equally celebrated for his role in masterminding the triumph. In a show of appreciation, Tebogo and his training partners, Leungo Scotch, Bayapo Ndori, and Anthony Pasela, surprised Mosimanyane with a brand-new Toyota Lexus car.
The celebrations didn’t stop there, as Mosimanyane was also gifted a polished diamond and P60,000 (approximately Ksh580,068) alongside other members of Team Botswana during an event organized by Debswana, De Beers Global Sight holder Sales, and Diamond Trading Company Botswana.
The rewards continued to pour in for Mosimanyane, who joined Tebogo at a ceremony hosted by Orange Botswana, where he was presented with P50,000 (approximately Ksh483,390). In addition, Mosimanyane is set to receive $18,747 (approximately Ksh2,413,676) from Choppies and was among 23 individuals honored with an expectant dairy cow by Minister Eric Molale.
Orange Botswana CEO Nene Maiga lauded Mosimanyane, emphasizing the importance of strong mentorship in guiding athletes to the pinnacle of international competition.
Mosimanyane’s journey with Tebogo began when the young sprinter first burst onto the scene, winning back-to-back World U20 Championships titles. Their partnership culminated in Tebogo’s success at the 2023 World Championships, where he claimed silver in the 100m and bronze in the 200m.
The Paris Olympics gold medal, therefore, stands as a testament to Mosimanyane’s effective training and strategic approach, marking the fulfillment of years of dedication and hard work.
