The One Thing Stopping a Kevin Durant Trade to Minnesota

Kevin Durant, forward for the Phoenix Suns, has become a hot topic throughout the league in recent weeks, as multiple teams explore trade options for the two-time NBA champion.

Coming off his 18th season, Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists across 62 games. Although he expressed his displeasure with his situation in Phoenix before the trade deadline, no deal was finalized despite the Suns’ attempts to find a suitor.

Durant has made it known that he prefers to land in Miami, Houston, or San Antonio. While other franchises have shown interest, that interest isn’t being reciprocated.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are one of the teams reportedly interested in Durant. Phoenix is receptive to what Minnesota might offer in return, but the Wolves are unwilling to proceed unless they know Durant is on board with the move.

“It’s really clear that Phoenix likes what Minnesota could potentially offer,” said Sam Amick of The Athletic. “But the Timberwolves have made it clear they’re not in this game unless they’re confident KD wants to be there. So, you could sense PHX trying to convince Kevin to add Minnesota to his list.”

This condition is what’s currently preventing Minnesota from pursuing a trade for the veteran forward.

With guard Devin Booker now the lone player remaining from the Suns’ 2021 Finals squad, Phoenix has struggled to make a deep playoff run since then. The team didn’t even qualify for the postseason this year.
