Mavericks’ governor, Patrick Dumont, broke his silence on the shocking trade of Luka Doncic. In an interview, Dumont was candid about the decision to allow GM Nico Harrison to complete the trade that brought Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick to Dallas. The deal left fans devastated, and protests erupted outside the American Airlines Center during Davis’ debut game.

Dumont acknowledged that the move was difficult and expressed gratitude for Doncic’s contributions. He sympathized with the fan backlash but explained that the decision was based on a desire for a specific team culture, emphasizing “culture, character, and focus.” Dumont pointed to basketball legends like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O’Neal as examples of players who worked relentlessly to win, stressing that this mentality was key to success with the Mavericks.

The Mavericks also faced rumors suggesting that Doncic’s $345 million supermax contract influenced the trade. Dumont, however, dismissed these claims, explaining that the trade was not financially motivated but rather a “risk-allocation decision.” He and the Adelson family are confident that acquiring Davis will help the Mavericks achieve their championship aspirations.
