Carter Bryant, selected 14th overall by the San Antonio Spurs, might end up being more than just a solid draft pick—his defensive impact could drive roster changes during the upcoming season.
While the Spurs had already secured standout prospect Dylan Harper with the No. 2 pick, adding Bryant at No. 14 may prove to be a game-changing bonus. The 19-year-old has been making his presence felt in the Las Vegas Summer League. In their opening game, the Spurs cruised past the Philadelphia 76ers with a dominant 111–70 win. Though the offense was impressive, it was Bryant’s defense that truly stood out.
Despite a modest stat line of five points and five rebounds, Bryant made his mark on the other end of the floor with three blocks and a steal. His quick instincts, defensive communication, and maturity set the tone for San Antonio.
When asked about his defensive approach, Bryant explained:
“My willingness to defend anybody. I don’t care if you’re 7’, 280. I don’t care if you’re 6’, 120 pounds. I think for me, I just try to do whatever I can to win a basketball game, whatever the coaching staff needs me to do.”
This mindset is exactly what the Spurs value in young players. With so much promising talent on the roster, San Antonio arguably has one of the strongest young cores in the league.
However, Bryant’s emergence could signal changes ahead. Standing 6’8” and weighing 225 pounds, the rookie is built to become an elite defender—an area currently occupied by Jeremy Sochan, another key part of the Spurs’ rotation. Last season, Sochan averaged 11.4 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 53.5% from the field and 30.8% from beyond the arc. Still, there’s room for growth, especially with a contract extension looming.
The overlapping roles of Bryant and Sochan might push both to grow—but they could also lead to movement. Rumors have swirled around Sochan ever since he was spotted in Phoenix, hinting at potential trade interest. In that case, having Bryant already in place gives San Antonio some leverage in any deal.
With a solid showing already under his belt and a gritty attitude on defense, Bryant could be the unexpected X-factor that prompts the Spurs to shake up their lineup before season’s end.
