Brandon Duenas, the Deputy Manager at Bright Side of the Sun and a sports journalist since 2020, suggests that while most attention is focused on the Suns’ potential big moves, such as acquiring Jimmy Butler, the team should also explore smaller transactions to improve the roster. One such move involves targeting Nance, the son of a Suns legend.
Nance has missed some time this season after surgery for a broken hand but has returned and played two games since January 25th. In 17 games this season, he’s averaged 9.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game, with impressive shooting stats of 53% from the field and 46% from deep. He could add a valuable, efficient rotation player to the Suns, both offensively and defensively. However, his injury history, having never played more than 70 games in a season, poses a risk.
The trade scenario presented here would see the Suns acquire Larry Nance Jr. in exchange for Jusuf Nurkic and a 2025 second-round pick (via Denver). While the trade would improve Phoenix’s depth, particularly with Nance’s versatility as a power forward or small-ball center, it also helps the Suns rid themselves of Nurkic’s contract.
For Atlanta, this deal would bring a second-round pick in a deep draft while unloading an expiring contract. The Hawks would be left with Nurkic as a backup to Onyeka Okongwu but would free up space after the 2025-26 season.
The trade might require Phoenix to also send a future first-round pick, especially if Atlanta is seeking that in exchange for Nance. A third team could potentially be involved to facilitate the deal and balance the finances, especially if Capela is part of the equation.
In conclusion, if the Suns can add a legitimate power forward/center like Nance, it gives them valuable flexibility both in big lineups and small-ball situations. What do you think, Suns fans? Let us know your thoughts on potential targets in the comments!
