The New York Yankees might be forced to demote a top prospect despite his dominant spring performance due to their need for experienced starting pitchers. With injuries depleting the rotation, the team faces tough decision .
Will Warren, ranked as the Yankees’ No. 5 prospect, has impressed with a 2.87 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 15.2 innings. However, veteran Carlos Carrasco, brought in on a minor league deal, has an opt-out clause that could push the team to keep him on the roster.
“The Yankees need Carlos Carrasco at this point in time simply because they don’t have that many starting pitchers on the roster right now,” said Alex Wilson of Fireside Yankees.
Yankees Rotation Weakened by Injuries
Initially considered one of the best in MLB, the Yankees’ starting rotation has taken several hits. Luis Gil, the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year, is sidelined for at least six weeks with a high-grade lat strain. Shortly after, Gerrit Cole was ruled out for the 2025 season due to Tommy John surgery.
Adding to the concerns, Clarke Schmidt was scratched from his Monday start due to shoulder soreness. He later threw a bullpen session and reassured reporters about his condition:
“Obviously was bouncing back a little slower this week and just being a little more cautious with the time of year,” Schmidt explained. “And losing a couple guys in the rotation, you don’t want to make a small thing a big thing. So just being smart and felt really good today.”
Despite Schmidt’s optimism, manager Aaron Boone remained cautious:
“I think we felt good about it, but anytime you’re [scratched], there’s still that trepidation, especially considering what we’ve been through so far with some guys this spring,” Boone said. “Hopefully we’re OK.”
Will Warren’s Uncertain Role Despite Stellar Spring
With Cole and Gil out, the Yankees are counting on Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, and Marcus Stroman. If Schmidt misses additional time, both Carrasco and Warren could secure roster spots. However, if only one rotation spot remains, the team faces a tough call.
“If this was a situation where there’s no ramifications to sending Carlos Carrasco down, this isn’t a conversation to me,” said Ryan Garcia on Fireside Yankees. “I think Will Warren has clearly earned that fifth starter job. He has been one of the most if not the most impressive pitcher for the Yankees in camp. His stuff has been remarkable.”
With the season fast approaching, the Yankees must weigh their options carefully. Keeping Carrasco would provide a veteran presence in an injury-riddled rotation, but sending Warren to Triple-A despite his standout performance could be a tough pill to swallow. If Schmidt remains healthy, Warren might find himself starting the year in the minors, waiting for his next opportunity. However, if injuries continue to pile up, the Yankees may have no choice but to rely on their young talent sooner rather than later.
For now, Warren has done everything possible to prove he belongs in the majors. The final decision rests with the Yankees’ front office, as they navigate a season that is already off to a challenging start.
