The New York Yankees decided not to re-sign Gleyber Torres, who eventually joined the Detroit Tigers. Torres mentioned that he believed the Yankees had other priorities and did not see him as part of their plans, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.
With Torres gone, the Yankees now need a second baseman. One option is to shift Jazz Chisholm Jr. or let D.J. LeMahieu take over. However, FanSided’s James Nolan suggested a potential trade for San Diego Padres star Luis Arraez.
Arraez, a three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger, has won three batting titles with three different teams. He could aim for a fourth title with a new team. Spotrac forecasts that Arraez will land a nine-year, $154 million deal when he hits free agency after the season.
Although Arraez is not known for his defense, with a career minus-seven outs above average at second base, his batting skills make him an intriguing option. Torres’ exit leaves the Yankees needing a leadoff hitter, and Arraez excels in that role.
“The 27-year-old has 409 games in the leadoff spot. He’s posted a .323 batting average and a .364 on-base percentage when leading off,” Nolan wrote. “With runners in scoring position, Arraez holds a staggering .369 batting average.”
With Arraez set to become a free agent, the Padres might look to trade him for a return. Though costly, if the Yankees see him as a long-term fit, they could be willing to pay.
“Giving up prospects is always a risk, but the Yankees have a window to win a World Series now. They have one of the best pitching staffs in MLB, with Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, and Luis Gil headlining,” Nolan added. “The lineup looks very good, but it could use one more piece. Arraez leading off in 2025 for the Yankees would be the perfect way to complement (Aaron) Judge and the rest of the sluggers.”
