Joe Torre, the former Yankees manager, recently shared some advice for Aaron Boone, who last appeared in the World Series as a player in 2003. Boone, now managing the New York Yankees, is preparing to lead the team in the 2024 World Series.
Reflecting on Boone’s situation, Torre, who managed Boone during his playing days, emphasized the importance of balancing instinct and analytics. “I remind managers who they are and how to use their experience in the game,” Torre told Dan Martin of the New York Post. He stressed that while data is crucial, managers shouldn’t abandon their gut feelings: “You never want to not use that.”
Torre also touched on the Yankees’ championship mindset. Simply reaching the World Series isn’t enough — winning is the ultimate expectation. “It’s the necessity to win,” Torre remarked. “It’s not about doing a good job to get there. You’re supposed to win, no matter what. When you work there, the expectations and pressure is high. But you know that going in.”
While Torre also spent time managing the Dodgers, his heart remains with the Yankees, the team with which he secured four World Series titles. As the Yankees and Dodgers prepare to face off in the 2024 World Series, starting Friday in Los Angeles, Torre’s advice highlights the high stakes and expectations for Boone and his team.
